Koyo Kouoh's Posthumous Vision Shapes Venice Biennale with Major African Representation

The 61st Venice Biennale, themed 'In Minor Keys,' opens on 9 May and runs until 22 November, featuring 111 invited artists. Koyo Kouoh, the first African woman appointed as artistic director, passed away in May 2025, but her curatorial team is committed to realizing her vision. A significant proportion of the selected artists are African or of African descent, reflecting a broader trend reshaping the global art landscape. This shift was reinforced by the 2026 Investec Cape Town Art Fair (ICTAF), Africa's largest international art fair, held annually in February and produced by Fiera Milano Exhibitions Africa. ICTAF's theme 'Listen' anticipated the Biennale's focus on introspection and subtlety, with director Laura Vincenti describing it as both a curatorial framework and a working principle. The fair incorporated talks and workshops to emphasize exchange over commerce, aligning with Kouoh's belief that art transmits knowledge. New African institutions like Macaal in Marrakech, Zeitz Mocaa in Cape Town, and the Guest Artists Space Foundation in Lagos, founded by artist Yinka Shonibare, signal the continent's growing presence. Africa's youthful population and rapid technological adoption are fueling innovation, with the global art community increasingly recognizing the continent as a hub of creative energy.
