Kouros Gallery's 2003 Watercolor Exhibition Features Zeuxis Artists and Surprising Works

From August 6 to 22, 2003, Kouros Gallery at 23 East 73 Street in New York presented a group exhibition focused on watercolor. The show included works by members of Zeuxis, an artist collective dedicated to still life painting, along with pieces from other galleries. George Constant's abstract watercolors from 1952 and circa 1960 were displayed, revealing his painterly gifts and connections to modernists like Baziotes and Sheila Delauney. Jorge Eduardo's hyper-realistic Study for Venice with Bridge showcased his technical precision, while Joseph Byrne's intimate tree studies offered personal interpretations. John Goodrich contributed light-filled still lifes, contrasting with his typically broody oil paintings. Carolyn Harris presented lush landscapes, Louise Matthiasdottir offered a subdued Hudson River scene, and David Dewey depicted a Belfast street. Ruth Miller, Phyllis Floyd, Victor Pesce, Robert DeNiro, Sr., Nell Blaine, Andrew Forge, and Garth Evans also had works in the exhibition. Evans's watercolors, displayed near a window upstairs, shared structural similarities with Forge's piece but differed in their lyrical geometry. The exhibition provided a relaxed end-of-season showcase without a rigid theme, allowing diverse sensibilities to coexist through the common medium of watercolor.
