Kore-eda's Monster Premieres at Cannes, Featuring Ryuichi Sakamoto's Final Score

festival-fair · 2026-04-27

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda returns to the Cannes Film Festival for the seventh time with his new film Monster (Kaibutsu), competing in the 76th edition. The film explores the relationships between a mother, her young son, and his teacher through three shifting perspectives, questioning objective truth. The screenplay is by Yuji Sakamoto, whom Kore-eda calls his favorite living screenwriter. Monster marks Kore-eda's return to Japan after his previous film Broker was shot entirely in South Korea. The score is by the late Ryuichi Sakamoto, his final film composition before his death in March 2023. The film will be distributed in Italy by BiM Distribuzione and Lucky Red.
