Kooness Study Reveals Gender Pay Gap in Art World

market-auction · 2026-04-27

A Kooness study reveals significant gender disparities in the art world. Analyzing 440 artists and over 2,700 works, the platform found male artists earn an average of €3,700 per work, while female artists earn just over €2,900—a 24% gap. Only 36.7% of analyzed works were by women. Among 406 winners of five major contemporary art prizes (Turner Prize, MacArthur, Hugo Boss, Bucksbaum Award, Duchamp Prize), only 37.7% were women. A survey of 2,000 people found 51.6% undervalue works by women. Kooness, founded in Milan in 2015, is an online platform connecting galleries with collectors. The study also references Artribune's research "Come campano le artiste?" and the Mother Art Prize, founded in 2013 by Dyana Gravina and Paola Lucente, supporting parenthood in the arts.
