Konstantin Grcic designs Nocturne lamp family for Flos, inspired by moonlight

architecture-design · 2026-04-20

German designer Konstantin Grcic has created Nocturne, a new family of lighting designs for Italian company Flos that aims to replicate the glow of the moon. The collection includes floor lamps with vertical tracks supporting multiple diffusers as well as suspension and wall-mounted versions. Each piece features an extruded aluminium stem and blown borosilicate glass shade in cone or dome shapes, casting both focused and ambient illumination. Grcic explains that the lunar reference stems from a desire to produce light that is present without harshness, simultaneously directional and atmospheric. This latest project follows his 2019 Noctambule collection and continues a 27-year collaboration that began in 1999 with the Mayday lamp. The designer notes that his work with Flos has evolved significantly due to LED technology, shifting from designing around standard bulbs to creating integrated light sources first. Grcic emphasizes that technical and poetic considerations remain intertwined in his approach to lighting design.
