Konchalovsky's Michelangelo Film Blends History and Sensuality
Andrey Konchalovsky's film "Il Peccato – Il Furore di Michelangelo" (The Sin – The Fury of Michelangelo) is released in Italy, offering a sensory and historically rich portrayal of the Renaissance artist. The film, co-written with Elena Kiseleva, stars Alberto Testone as Michelangelo and features Orso Maria Guerrini. Shot over 14 weeks, it was produced by Andrei Konchalovsky Studios, Jean Vigo Italia, and Rai Cinema, with funding from Alisher Usmanov's foundation Arte, Scienza e Sport. The narrative focuses on Michelangelo's struggles with patrons, family, and his own genius, emphasizing his physical labor in the quarries of Monte Altissimo near Carrara. Konchalovsky uses real quarrymen and sculptors as actors, and the film's production design by Maurizio Sabatini and costumes by Dmitry Andreev enhance its authenticity. The film premiered at the Festa del Cinema di Roma with screenings in Carrara, Rome, Milan, and Florence, involving local authorities and the Henraux quarry company. Konchalovsky, who won the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice in 2014 for "The Postman's White Nights" and again in 2016 for "Paradise," continues his exploration of human weakness and artistic greatness.
