Kolkata Center for Creativity Opens November 21 with Dashrath Patel Inaugural Show

institutional · 2026-05-04

The Kolkata Center for Creativity (KCC), a 6,500-square-meter multidisciplinary arts space, will open on November 21 in Calcutta, India. Designed by architect and interior designer Pinakin Patel, who also serves as creative director, the center includes the Emami Art exhibition space, a Centre of Contemporary Culture, a Children's Corner educational room, a library, a café, and an event hall. Executive director Richa Agarwal stated that KCC will engage the public year-round through artistic programs, workshops, and libraries. The inaugural exhibition at Emami Art will feature the late Indian artist and designer Dashrath Patel, showcasing his drawings, ceramics, and collages from the 1930s to 2000, with special attention to his previously overlooked photographic work. KCC will host rotating temporary exhibitions without a permanent collection. The opening coincides with broader cultural developments in India, including Sotheby's opening a Mumbai office to engage local collectors and Indian Railways' collaboration with local artists to decorate a train between Darbhanga and New Delhi using Madhubani folk art, dubbed the 'art train' by passengers.
