Kohei Maekawa Named BJP Ones to Watch 2025 for 'Yard' Series
British Journal of Photography has selected Kohei Maekawa as part of its Ones to Watch 2025, a list of international photographers nominated by curators, editors, and artists. Maekawa's series 'Yard' captures eccentric houses on the outskirts of Tokyo, discovered while delivering pizzas at night. Using strobe flash, he reveals cluttered facades adorned with cat figurines, cryptic messages, empty bottles, and broken cars. The work explores Japan's 'mottainai' culture of repurposing objects. Maekawa, a graduate of Nihon University College of Art (2018), previously documented a leprosy isolation institution and Japan's scarecrow village in 'Carved Land'. Nominators David O'Mara and Jörg Colberg praise the series for documenting spontaneous creativity and offering an alternative view of Japan. Maekawa continues to work as an e-commerce photographer and occasionally delivers pizzas.
