Knebworth's Rock Legacy: Queen's Final Gig and Oasis Reunion Hopes
Henry Lytton Cobbold, owner of Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, recalls the estate's storied rock history, including Queen's final performance with Freddie Mercury on 9 August 1986, which closed their sold-out European tour. Mercury's performance before 125,000 people was his last with the band; he died five years later from AIDS-related bronchial pneumonia. Cobbold, then 24, remembers the backstage celebrations with fairground rides and mud wrestling, and notes that no one recorded the show, leaving only news footage and a bootleg by a Dutch fan. The estate has hosted concerts since 1974, with Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and others playing in the 1970s and 80s. In 1996, Oasis played two nights to 250,000 fans, and Cobbold recalls Noel Gallagher's post-show bath with champagne brought by his father. The 1996 shows funded two turrets named Noel and Liam. Robbie Williams drew 375,000 in 2003, the largest crowd. Recently, SJM Concerts, promoter of Oasis' 2025 reunion, was granted a licence for events at Knebworth, though Cobbold insists nothing is confirmed. He is confident Oasis will return, possibly announcing dates around their September documentary release.
