Klonaris/Thomadaki: The Political Destiny of Angels
In November 2001, the Cinémathèque française showcased a retrospective of the works by Maria Klonaris and Katerina Thomadaki, emphasizing their contributions to experimental cinema and themes of intersexuality. The pair first crossed paths in Greece during the colonels' regime and relocated to France in the 1970s, where they pioneered 'corporeal cinema.' Their debut film, Double Labyrinthe (1976), featured symmetrical montage. Unheimlich II: Astarti (1980) presented three 'actantes' over three hours, while Unheimlich III: Les Mères (1981) utilized multiple projectors at the Centre Pompidou. Their installation Mystère I: Hermaphrodite endormi/e at the 1982 Biennale de Paris incorporated sound from Ircam. The Cycle de l'Ange (1985-2001) examined cloning, Requiem pour le 20e siècle (1994) tackled war, and Désastres sublimes (2000) focused on conjoined twins. From 1990, they also organized the Rencontres internationales Art cinéma / vidéo / ordinateur d'Astarti.
