Klimt's Giuditta II Anchors Seduction-Themed Show in Mestre

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia has launched a new exhibition cycle at the Centro Culturale Candiani in Mestre, aiming to revitalize the Venetian mainland by staging creative dialogues around works from the city's civic collections. The inaugural show, curated by Pier Luigi Pizzi, centers on Gustav Klimt's "Giuditta II (Salomè)" from Ca' Pesaro, using seduction as its thematic thread. Over 80 works, mostly from Venetian collections, explore the multifaceted nature of femininity and its often distorted perceptions. The installation employs black theatrical backdrops to create a stage-like setting, with Klimt's painting positioned off-center yet omnipresent. Surrounding it are works by Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, Egon Schiele, Edvard Munch, Jacopo Amigoni, and Vittorio Zecchin, alongside contemporary pieces by Rocco Normanno and Sarah Lucas. The exhibition promises to foster visual cross-currents between epochs and artists, fulfilling its dialogic ambitions.
