Kleureyck Exhibition at Design Museum Gent Explores Van Eyck's Color Palette in Contemporary Design
The Design Museum Gent presents 'Kleureyck. Van Eyck’s colours in design', an exhibition dedicated to color and its use in art and design. Curated by Siegrid Demyttenaere, the show draws inspiration from Jan van Eyck's revolutionary color techniques, particularly his Ghent Altarpiece. The exhibition is structured into three sections: Pigment Walk, Research Projects, and Experience Rooms. Pigment Walk features over 100 contemporary works by Belgian and international artists and designers, categorized into 13 color groups based on van Eyck's palette. Eleven designers created site-specific installations for the show. Participating artists include Anish Kapoor, Ettore Sottsass, and Patricia Urquiola. Demyttenaere emphasized that van Eyck combined artistic sensibility with knowledge of physics, chemistry, and perspective, painting with light. Designers were invited to view the restoration of the Ghent Altarpiece for inspiration. The exhibition aims to reveal the layered nature of the design process, showing that design involves research, knowledge, technique, talent, and teamwork. The show runs until February 21, 2021, at the Design Museum Gent.
