Klein Agency designs sculptural walls for Armadillo's New York flagship in historic 1897 building

architecture-design · 2026-04-22

The Los Angeles-based Klein Agency designed the new New York flagship for Australian rug brand Armadillo, merging contemporary interventions with the heritage of an 1897 building. Architects preserved original pine floors, columns, and moldings across the 4,000-square-foot space while introducing sculptural walls that create rhythmic choreography. Tall ceilings and numerous windows overlooking Madison Square Park maintain a lofty, sunlit atmosphere. The design combines warmth and curved geometry with the building's existing quirks, resulting in a tactile environment full of surprises. Klein Agency's approach honored the site's historical character while establishing a distinctive spatial language for displaying rugs.
