Kiyo Takeda's Living Architecture Transforms Tokyo

Japanese architect Kiyo Takeda, founder of Kiyo Takeda Architects in Tokyo (2019), challenges the notion that architecture should impose order on nature. His buildings embrace unpredictability, integrating plants, weather, and ecosystems as active collaborators. After studying at the University of East London and working at Kengo Kuma & Associates from 2008, Takeda established his practice. His philosophy treats buildings as participants in nature, not mere coexistents. Tsuruoka House (2021), his own home and studio in Tokyo, features concrete vaults cradling soil beds above living spaces, inspired by a 2020 Nature study showing human-made mass exceeded living biomass. Birds have naturally seeded the roof with grasses and native plants. In 2024, Takeda completed Play! Koukashita under a railway viaduct in Nerima Ward, transforming it into an urban oasis using the viaduct's light, airflow, and rainwater collection. His latest project, SOIL Nihonbashi Hotel (2025), a 14-room boutique hotel in Ningyocho, echoes the neighborhood's "kabu-wake" tradition of sharing plant cuttings. Its undulating facade mimics terracotta planters and clay soil; neighbors donated cuttings. Interior features stone handles from Itoigawa, wood finishes, and recycled ceramic planters. Guests are encouraged to explore affiliated businesses like Pizza Tane and Parklet Bakery. Takeda's architecture offers a living framework where humans, plants, animals, and time shape the finished work.
