Kiss My Genders: Gender Fluidity Explored at Hayward Gallery

The Hayward Gallery in London has opened 'Kiss My Genders', a group exhibition curated by Vincent Honoré of MoCo Montpellier Contemporain, with support from Tarini Malik and Thomas Sutton. Featuring over 100 works by 30 artists spanning from the 1950s to today, the show investigates gender fluidity through trans, non-binary, and intersex identities. The title playfully paraphrases 'Kiss My Ass', but the themes are serious, addressing societal mistreatment and trauma while celebrating the movement's creativity and cultural significance. Works range from painting and video to sculpture and site-specific installation. Highlights include Zanele Muholi's photographic self-portraits, recently seen at the Venice Biennale; Kent Monkman's large paintings critiquing colonialism through a gender-fluid alter ego; Hunter Reynolds's 'Memorial Dress' (1993) listing 25,000 AIDS victims; and new commissions like Jenkin van Zyl's 'Looners' (2019) and Chitra Ganesh's 'At Her Dream's Edge'.
