Kishio Suga's Situations retrospective at Pirelli HangarBicocca explores Mono-ha materiality

exhibition · 2026-04-20

From 30 September 2016 to 29 January 2017, Kishio Suga's retrospective exhibition, Situations, was showcased at Pirelli HangarBicocca in Milan. The exhibition featured 23 reactivated sculptures dating back to 1969, predominantly placed on the concrete floor and interspersed with black columns. Noteworthy works included Critical Sections (1984/2016), Continuous Existence–HB (1977/2016), and Infinite Situation iii (door) (1970/2016). The highlight of the exhibition, Left-Behind Situation (1972/2016), incorporated over 1km of industrial wire cable. Suga utilized materials such as stones, zinc plates, and plywood, emphasizing transient arrangements. His work, influenced by American Minimalism and Buddhist spirituality, examined materiality and resistance to consumerism, while offering limited documentation. In the late 1960s, Suga studied under Yoshishige Saito at Tama Art University.
