Kintsugi-Inspired Title Sequence for Apple TV+’s Imperfect Women
Creative director Karin Fong and her studio Imaginary Forces designed the main title sequence for the Apple TV+ series Imperfect Women, starring Kate Mara, Elisabeth Moss, and Kerry Washington. The sequence uses fractured ceramics as a visual metaphor for the intimacy, rivalry, and betrayal among three longtime friends. Drawing from kintsugi—the Japanese art of mending pottery with gold—the design highlights damage rather than hiding it. The team built a ceramic collage blending 2-D and 3-D elements, incorporating landscapes, faces, and textures. Animator Henry Chang studied photographic references to make cracks appear both random and visually pleasing. Lead Houdini artist Scott Bell animated gold rivulets that pool and harden within the cracks, adding realism. Editor Lexi Gunvaldson used music to underscore the gold’s first appearance. Los Angeles served as a key influence, with glimpses of the Downtown LA skyline, Colorado Street Bridge, Griffith Observatory, and the city’s hills and coastline. Designer Jeffrey Su created an aerial shot that reads as cliffs and ocean but is actually a body. The show’s setting on fault lines adds another layer of meaning. The team researched ceramics, clays, glazes, crazing, and bas-relief to inform the design.
