KinderKunstLabor: A Playful Contemporary Art Lab for Children in Sankt Pölten

architecture-design · 2026-05-06

In Sankt Pölten, Austria, the KinderKunstLabor designed by Schenker Salvi Weber Architekten opened in 2024. This 2,957 m² architectural project is neither a museum nor an indoor playground but a laboratory for children up to twelve years old from all social and educational backgrounds. It allows them to interact with contemporary art through playful, sensory workshops and high-level exhibitions. The design was uniquely challenged to be seen from a child's perspective while maintaining a serious commitment to art. The project team included architects Andres Schenker, Michael Salvi, and Thomas Weber, with structural engineering by Werner Sobek and lighting by Christian Ploderer. The space is curated by Hadir Al Koshta.
