Kimsooja's first Australian solo show at PICA
Kimsooja's first solo exhibition in Australia, 'Zone of Nowhere', opened at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts (PICA) in 2018. Curated by Eugenio Viola, the show features site-specific installations including the titular 'Zone of Nowhere' with all world flags, including those of unrecognized nations and a provocative South Korea–North Korea pairing. Her signature 'bottari' bundles, made from fabrics sourced in Perth, sit beneath the flags. Another work, 'Mandala – Zone of Zero', originally created during the Iraq War, is presented on a red background for the first time, accompanied by a mix of Gregorian, Tibetan, and Hindu chants. The exhibition extends outdoors with public murals based on 'To Breathe – The Flags', a video commissioned for the 2012 London Olympics, installed at seven locations around Perth. Viola describes Kimsooja's practice as 'Neo-Umanesimo' and 'artivism', blending art with political activism. The show runs until April 29, 2018.
