Kim Gordon's First US Museum Retrospective at Warhol Museum

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Kim Gordon, known as bassist and vocalist of Sonic Youth, is the subject of 'Lo-Fi Glamour,' her first major US museum retrospective at the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Gordon, who studied at Otis College of Art and Design and befriended Mike Kelley, Dan Graham, and Cindy Sherman, began her art career with a 1981 show at White Columns in New York. She returned to painting in the early 2000s, intensifying her practice after Sonic Youth's breakup and her divorce from Thurston Moore. The exhibition features 'Noise Name Paintings' inspired by her music history, 'Twitter paintings' capturing posts by Stephen Malkmus and Jerry Saltz, drawings, sculptures, and a high-volume video installation for which sensitive visitors are advised to use headphones. Gordon also created an original soundtrack for Warhol's film 'Kiss' (1963-64), available as a limited-edition LP. The show's title references Sonic Youth's lo-fi aesthetic and Warhol's lo-fi interpretation of pop culture. On June 14, the museum will screen Raymond Pettibon's 'Sir Drone' (1989), featuring Mike Kelley and Mike Watt.
