Kim Gordon and Melvins prove older artists can still innovate
Kim Gordon (born 1953), co-founder of Sonic Youth, released the album 'The Collective' in spring 2024, produced by Justin Riesen. The album blends noise, trap, and dissonance, drawing from her punk and no-wave background. Gordon, also a visual artist trained in the Pictures Generation, has recently revived her art practice. The Melvins, fronted by Buzz Osborne (born 1964), released 'Tarantula Heart', expanding their sludge/grunge sound with the 19-minute track 'Pain Equals Fun'. Both albums exemplify creative freedom unconstrained by market pressures or fan expectations, contrasting with Pearl Jam's 'Dark Matter', which failed to achieve similar depth despite producer Andrew Watt. The article argues that older artists often outpace younger ones in experimentation, citing Gordon and the Melvins as prime examples.
