Kiev National Art Museum Damaged in Russian Strike, Forced to Close
On May 23-24, 2026, the National Art Museum of Ukraine (NAMU) in Kiev sustained damage due to a Russian airstrike that involved 90 missiles and 600 drones. Although windows and skylights were affected, all staff and collections remained safe, as key artworks had been relocated to secure storage in February 2022. NAMU continued to function partially, hosting conferences and exhibitions, and loaned over sixty pieces to the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium for the exhibit "In the Eye of the Storm." In 2024, NAMU benefited from restoration support from ALIPH, which had earlier provided funding for collection security in 2022. Other affected institutions included the National Museum of Chernobyl and the National Philharmonic, with UNESCO estimating €3.8 billion in damages across 526 cultural sites.
