Kiev Biennale's Second Edition 'The School of Kiev' Opens in September After Funding and Political Challenges

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

Amidst speculation of cancellation and considerable internal strife, the second Kiev Biennale is set to commence in September 2015, titled The School of Kiev. Curators Hedwig Saxenhuber and Georg Schöllhammer confirmed the event’s progression, despite its initial schedule for 2014 being postponed and ultimately scrapped due to challenges in fundraising and ongoing unrest in Ukraine. The curators successfully challenged this cancellation and obtained financial backing from various European governments, foundations, and institutions, compensating for the loss of support from the Ukrainian government and the primary venue, Mystetskyi Arsenale. The biennale will showcase over 50 artists, including Hito Steyerl and Neïl Beloufa, and will unfold across six thematic platforms addressing societal issues from September 8 to November 1, 2015.
