Kholodnyi Yar Republic: The Last Ukrainian Peasant Resistance Against Bolshevism
The Kholodnoyarskaya Republic was an unrecognized peasant state that resisted Bolshevik rule in the Kholodnyi Yar region of central Ukraine from 1919 to 1922. Located in the Chyhyryn district (now Cherkasy), the republic covered 25 villages with a population of 30,000. Led by Otaman Vasyl Chuchupak, a 24-year-old former teacher and WWI veteran, the insurgents used guerrilla tactics in the forest-steppe terrain. The republic's flag bore the motto 'Freedom to Ukraine or Death.' After Chuchupak's suicide in April 1920 to avoid capture, his deputy Ivan Derkach led further uprisings. The Bolsheviks eventually crushed the republic through a Cheka operation called 'Operation Testament,' which infiltrated rebel ranks using fake Black Sea Rebel Group agents. In February 1923, 38 captured otamans staged a prison uprising at Lukyanivska Prison in Kyiv, killing themselves rather than face execution. The Soviets later repressed the population through executions, confiscations, and labor camps. In 2016, after Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, the Kyiv Court of Appeals rehabilitated the Kholodnyi Yar fighters, recognizing them as independence fighters. The republic's black flag reappeared during the 2014 Euromaidan protests, and today the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade continues the legacy.
