Khandakar Ohida Wins 7th Jameel Prize for 'Dream Your Museum' Installation

award · 2026-04-22

Khandakar Ohida has been awarded the 7th Jameel Prize, receiving £25,000 for her 2022 film and installation titled 'Dream Your Museum.' This prestigious international accolade, presented by Art Jameel in collaboration with London's V&A Museum, honors artists inspired by Islamic traditions. Ohida's creation incorporates items from her uncle Khandakar Selim's extensive fifty-year collection, once displayed in a traditional mud house, and critiques Western perspectives on object value and museum authority while reflecting Muslim identity in India. An international jury, including Moreshin Allahyari, Ajlan Gharem, Sadia Shirazi, and Laura U. Marks, chose Ohida from seven finalists, which included Sadik Kwaish Alfraji and others. The V&A Director, Tristram Hunt, commended the 'quiet power' of her work. The winning installation will be showcased with other finalists at the 'Jameel Prize: Moving Images' exhibition at the V&A from November 30 to March 16, 2025. Ohida has also exhibited at the 12th Berlin Biennale and the 59th Venice Biennale in 2022, as well as MUDAM Luxembourg in 2024. The Jameel Prize, held triennially, aims to honor Islamic heritage within contemporary art.
