Khalid Albaih's 'Shahid' at Mathaf: Interactive Installation on Witnessing Gaza

On May 6, 2024, the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, Qatar, launched the exhibition 'Khalid Albaih: Shahid,' which will be available until August 10, 2024. This showcase highlights the work of Khalid Albaih, a Sudanese artist and political cartoonist born in Bucharest in 1980. Curated by Fatma Mostafawi and Hadeel Al-Kohaji, the exhibition features an interactive audiovisual installation that includes four printed digital illustrations on a wall mirror. These artworks draw inspiration from viral moments on social media related to the ongoing Gaza conflict, allowing visitors to see their reflections alongside the victims depicted, reinforcing their role as witnesses. A recording of the names and ages of martyrs enhances the overall experience. Zeina Arida, Mathaf's Director, emphasized the exhibition's dedication to supporting regional artists and significant issues. Albaih highlights the interconnectedness of global struggles, asserting that if the world overlooks Gaza, it also overlooks Sudan.
