Kenneth Frampton awarded Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice Architecture Biennale
Kenneth Frampton, the influential English architect, historian, and critic, has been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The decision was made by the Biennale's Board of Directors, chaired by Paolo Baratta, upon the recommendation of curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. Born in London in 1930 and educated at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, Frampton has taught at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation since 1972, and has lectured at the Royal College of Art, ETH Zurich, Berlage Institute, EPFL Lausanne, and the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio. His seminal works include 'Modern Architecture: A Critical History,' 'Towards a Critical Regionalism,' 'Studies on Tectonic Cultures,' and 'A Genealogy of Modern Architecture.' The award ceremony will take place on May 26, 2018, at Ca' Giustinian, the Biennale's headquarters, during the inauguration of the 2018 Architecture Biennale, which opens to the public at 10 a.m. the same day. Farrell and McNamara praised Frampton's 'extraordinary insight and intelligence, combined with a unique sense of integrity,' calling him 'the voice of truth in promoting the key values of architecture.' Baratta noted that 'there is no architecture student who has not held his History of Modern Architecture in their hands.'
