Kengo Kuma Endorses Campaign to Turn V&A Dundee into Lego Set

A campaign is underway to transform the V&A Dundee, designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, into Lego's first Scottish building set. The initiative follows the creation of a 2,900-piece model replica by Brian McNicoll, founder of web studio 532 Design. The prototype is currently displayed within the museum and has been submitted to Lego's Ideas platform, where fan-built designs can be voted into official sets. To be considered for production, the design must receive 10,000 supporters; it has already garnered over 2,800 votes, with support from local schools. Kuma, for whom the V&A Dundee was his first UK building, has publicly backed the campaign, stating that an official Lego set would introduce the building to 'people all over the world.' He praised McNicoll's translation of the design, noting the building's role as a 'gate' connecting the city to global trade routes. The museum, completed in 2018 as an outpost of London's V&A, features two angular volumes clad in 2,500 precast concrete panels, a design McNicoll found particularly suited to Lego due to its banded, angular facade. McNicoll used photographs and 3D visuals from a Dundee Waterfront app to ensure accuracy. The campaign will run until next year. This comes after Lego released its largest set to date, the Sagrada Familia with 12,060 pieces, and a giant World Cup trophy in New York made from 1.3 million bricks.
