Ken Loach Wins Palme d'Or at Cannes 2016

Ken Loach won the Palme d'Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival for his film 'I, Daniel Blake', ten years after his previous win for 'The Wind That Sweeps the Wind'. At 80, he was the oldest director in competition. Xavier Dolan, the youngest, received the Grand Prix for 'Juste la Fin du Monde', despite press disappointment. Asghar Farhadi's 'The Salesman' won two awards: Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Shahab Hosseini, defying expectations that Jim Jarmusch's 'Paterson' would win. The Iranian juror's influence was noted. Best Actress went to Jaclyn Jose for 'Ma' Rosa' by Brillante Mendoza, not Sonia Braga. Olivier Assayas and Cristian Mungiu shared Best Director. The Jury Prize went to Andrea Arnold's 'American Honey', a road movie suited to President George Miller. The Caméra d'Or for best first feature was awarded to 'Divines' by Houda Benyamina. The Palme d'Honneur was given to Jean-Pierre Léaud. Best short film Palme d'Or went to 'Timecode' by Juanjo Gimenez, with a special jury prize to 'A Moça Que Dançou com o Diabo' by Joao Paulo Miranda Maria.
