Kelly Reichardt's 'The Mastermind' Turns Art Heist into Existential Meditation

other · 2026-04-26

Kelly Reichardt's new film 'The Mastermind' uses an art heist to explore themes of solitude, failure, and responsibility. Set in a 1970s Massachusetts residential neighborhood, the film follows unemployed carpenter and father James Blaine Mooney (Josh O'Connor), who, crushed by bourgeois expectations, organizes an art theft with a small-time criminal gang. Their target: a series of abstract paintings by early 20th-century American artist Arthur Dove. The heist occurs in the first quarter of the film; the rest depicts the aftermath and inevitable collapse following the illusion of control. Reichardt cites inspiration from Jean-Pierre Melville's noir masterpieces and Georges Simenon's novels, but subverts their rhythm. The film features Bill Camp as the father-judge, Hope Davis as the generous mother, Alana Haim as wife Terri, and children silently observing the family's implosion. Reichardt notes the idea originated in the 1990s when she considered making a Super 8 art-heist film, and was revived after reading about the 50th anniversary of a theft at the Worcester Art Museum involving teenage girls. She constructed a mosaic plot intertwining various real crime cases from that era. The four Dove paintings were recreated for the film, reflecting on art's ephemeral value and possession. Reichardt transforms the art heist into a meditation on existence, where the real blow is not to a museum but silently to one's own conscience.
