Kelly Moran on Prepared Piano, Disklavier, and Her New Album Moves in the Field

artist · 2026-04-26

Born in 1988 in New York, American composer Kelly Moran merges classical piano with electronic innovation and the prepared piano techniques of John Cage. She pursued her studies in Performing Arts Technology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and explored minimalism at UC Irvine. Upon her return to New York, she worked alongside no-wave punk bands. Her initial album, Optimist, was released in 2016, followed by Bloodroot in 2017, which The New York Times recognized as one of the 25 best classical albums of that year. In 2018, she signed with Warp Records and launched Ultraviolet. In March 2024, she unveiled Moves in the Field, drawing inspiration from Philip Glass and others. Currently, Moran is on tour across the US, Europe, and the UK, describing art as "the organization of an intent."
