Keith Haring's First Major UK Retrospective at Tate Liverpool

exhibition · 2026-05-04

Tate Liverpool will host the first major UK retrospective dedicated to Keith Haring (1958–1990) from June 14 to November 10, 2019. The exhibition, simply titled 'Keith Haring', brings together over 85 works spanning the American artist's entire practice. Haring rose to prominence in 1980s New York counterculture with his distinctive visual vocabulary of barking dogs, crawling babies, and flying saucers—icons loaded with social and political meaning. The show includes large-scale drawings and paintings, and highlights the performative nature of his work, such as his live subway drawings documented by photographer Tseng Kwong Chi. Haring also collaborated with Madonna, Grace Jones, Vivienne Westwood, and Malcolm McLaren, creating sets for their videos and performances. The exhibition is held at the Royal Albert Dock location.
