Keith Haring Retrospective Opens at BOZAR in Brussels

exhibition · 2026-04-27

A major retrospective on Keith Haring (Reading, 1958 – New York, 1990) opens at BOZAR – Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels from December 6, 2019 to April 19, 2020, with a preview on December 5. The exhibition traces the artist's career chronologically and thematically, featuring over 85 works including drawings and paintings, archival documents, photographs, posters, murals, and rarely seen videos. A highlight is the immersive Black Light installation from 1983, where works fluoresce under ultraviolet light, accompanied by disco and post-punk electronic music. Haring, a friend and collaborator of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat, was a key figure in 1980s New York counterculture, known for his iconic motifs of barking dogs, crawling babies, and flying saucers with political meanings tied to his activism. Before dying of AIDS nearly thirty years ago, he founded the Keith Haring Foundation to support nonprofits focused on disadvantaged children and AIDS education, prevention, research, and care. The exhibition is curated by Claudia Giraud.
