Keiichi Matsuda's 'Merged' explores productivity obsession in 360° dystopian short

digital · 2026-05-04

Japanese filmmaker Keiichi Matsuda, known for his viral dystopian short 'Hyper-Reality' about augmented reality, has released a new 360-degree interactive video titled 'Merged'. The four-minute film follows a female protagonist at her immersive workstation where physical and virtual realities blend. Despite her efforts, she cannot keep up with escalating efficiency demands, leading her to a drastic decision: shedding her physical body to merge permanently with the machine. Matsuda commented, 'We need to radically restructure our society, making automation a resource and not a threat. The very idea of work will have to change. Many of the products we use should theoretically make our lives easier and more efficient, but the ideology of productivity is always at the center of our lives, whether we like it or not.' The film addresses contemporary anxieties around productivity, technology, and the blurring line between human and machine.
