Kazakh Museum Cancels Taiwanese Art Show Amid Suspected Chinese Pressure

exhibition · 2026-04-19

The Central State Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Almaty canceled "Shifting Grounds: Dissonance, Memory, and Landscape as a Site of Becoming" just before its September 12 opening. Taiwanese artist and curator Wang Chun-chi organized the exhibition featuring eight Taiwanese artists, promoted as Almaty's first Taiwanese art show. Museum officials cited a one-month renovation starting September 11 and scheduling conflicts after terminating the contract on August 20. Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called the decision "clearly incoherent" and pointed to "clear signs of China's interference" in a September 21 statement. Taiwan's representative office in Moscow attempted to salvage the exhibition without success. ARTouch reported the museum hosted a fashion event shortly after canceling the Taiwanese exhibition, raising questions about the renovation explanation. This follows a similar August incident at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre where Chinese embassy officials prompted partial censorship of a group exhibition. The ministry pledged to continue defending Taiwan's international space amid these diplomatic pressures.
