Kay Sage & Yves Tanguy: Surrealist Couple in New York Exhibition

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Helly Nahmad Gallery in New York presents 'Kay Sage & Yves Tanguy: Ring of Iron, Ring of Wool', the third joint exhibition of the surrealist couple ever organized. Curated by independent British art historian Victoria Noel Johnson, the show features over 60 works on loan from prestigious museums and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Fondazione Pierre e Tana Matisse. The exhibition highlights the reciprocal artistic exchange between Sage and Tanguy, juxtaposing Tanguy's fantastic landscapes with Sage's metaphysical dreamscapes of arid plains and architectural scaffolds. Sage, who helped surrealists flee Paris during WWII and founded The Society for the Preservation of European Culture in 1939, is reframed as a key figure rather than merely Tanguy's muse. The show runs accompanied by a Skira publication with texts by Johnson, Stephen Robeson Miller, and Ara H. Merjian.
