KAWS Collection Exhibition at The Drawing Center Critiqued for Celebrity Focus Over Curatorial Depth

The Drawing Center in New York is showcasing 'The Way I See It: Selections from the KAWS Collection,' which features approximately 400 pieces from artist Brian Donnelly, widely recognized as KAWS. Over 24 years, he has built a collection of more than 4,000 items that emphasize graffiti, outsider, and surrealist art. The exhibition includes two recreations of KAWS's office, arranged salon-style, displaying works by Haroshi and H.C. Westermann. Other highlighted pieces are Joyce Pensato's Mickey Mouse interpretations, sketches by Lee Quiñones, and a 1971 Picasso harlequin head. Critic Marcus Civin mentions the exhibition's lack of curatorial direction. Running until January 19, it appeals to KAWS's celebrity admirers, such as Drake and Pharrell Williams. KAWS is also famous for his collectible toys and brand collaborations.
