Kaunas Biennial 2017 to explore monument politics under curator Paulina Pukyte

festival-fair · 2026-04-20

The 11th Kaunas Biennial will run from 15 September to 30 November 2017 in Kaunas, Lithuania. Curator Paulina Pukyte, an artist and writer based in London and Vilnius, will lead the edition titled 'There and Not Here. Questioning the Possibility of a Monument'. This biennial examines the populist practice of monument removal and erection following political changes, alongside conservationist approaches that have shaped Lithuanian public art for a century. By addressing memory discourse construction, the event aims to stimulate new conceptual strategies for remembrance. International and local artists will be invited to reconsider removed monuments, rethink existing ones, and imagine future memorials. The biennial seeks to legitimize contemporary ideas about how societies remember their histories.
