Katonah Museum of Art showcases self-taught artists from William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation through October 11

The Katonah Museum of Art in Westchester County presents 'Inside the Outside: Five Self-Taught Artists from the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation' until October 11. This exhibition highlights five key modern masters in the American unschooled tradition, drawn from the extensive collection of the William Louis-Dreyfus Foundation. Featured artists include James Castle and Bill Traylor, whose works on paper are displayed in salon-style arrangements. Willie Young, who attended museum school classes, contributes visionary drawings that diverge from classic art brut aesthetics. Thornton Dial is represented by muscular murals, while Nellie Mae Rowe's dense, colorful designs on canvas, such as 'Early Bird' from 1981, demonstrate her unique perspective. Rowe famously stated she draws subjects differently because she sees things differently. The museum, located an hour from Grand Central Terminal in New York, offers this exhibition as a summer alternative to city museum shows. The show serves as a sampling of the foundation's significant holdings of both trained and self-taught artists.
