Katie Edwards' Field of View Turns Utrecht Centraal into a Moving Landscape
At Utrecht Centraal, the busiest train station in Europe, photographer Katie Edwards has unveiled her site-specific photographic installation titled Field of View. This work features 40 images captured over three years along the Haarlem–Leiden rail line, showcasing blooming tulip fields. Edwards has traveled more than 30,000 kilometers throughout Europe, taking photos solely through train windows. Each image is printed to match the dimensions of the window it was taken from and is displayed as backlit panels with daylight-calibrated LED lighting within a black wood modular frame. The fabric prints offer a painterly effect. Following her earlier Portrait of America series, which covered 10,000 miles of U.S. railways, Field of View is supported by Interrail, which connects 33 European nations. Kavita Kooijman from Interrail praised the installation for encapsulating the spirit of exploration inherent in train journeys. Edwards described her approach as spontaneous, capturing the landscape in bursts and revealing intricate details during the editing phase. This installation marks the beginning of a series of site-specific projects for train stations throughout Europe and will be accessible to the public on 23 and 25 April 2026.
