Katia Kameli on the Complex Status of Images in Algeria
In a conversation with artpress, Katia Kameli, a Franco-Algerian artist, elaborates on her exhibition titled "Elle a allumé le vif du passé," currently on display at Frac Paca in Marseille until September 19, 2021. This exhibition showcases her works "Stream of Stories" (initiated in 2015) and "Le Roman algérien" (2016, 2017, 2019). "Stream of Stories" links La Fontaine's fables to the ancient text "Kalîla wa Dimna," presenting Arabic manuscripts that challenge Western interpretations of Islamic iconography. Meanwhile, "Le Roman algérien" features three video segments that delve into Algeria's history, addressing challenges such as limited imagery due to state restrictions and technological issues. Kameli identifies the Hirak protests as pivotal for citizen documentation. Additionally, a monograph on her work has been released by Manuella Éditions.
