Kate Middleton curates Victorian Giants photography exhibition at National Portrait Gallery
Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has contributed as a guest curator to 'Victorian Giants: The Birth of Art Photography' at the National Portrait Gallery in London, opening March 1, 2018. She selected photographs for the show and wrote the preface to the catalogue, drawing on her art history degree from the University of St. Andrews. The exhibition, curated by Phillip Prodger, features works by Julia Margaret Cameron, Lewis Carroll, Oscar Rejlander, and Lady Clementina Hawarden, pioneers of Victorian art photography. It includes rarely seen treasures like the original negative of Carroll's portrait of Alice Liddell, his muse for 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.' Middleton, a patron of the gallery and amateur photographer, expressed particular interest in the children portrayed, reflecting on the Victorian celebration of childhood. Director Nicholas Cullinan praised her personal involvement. The exhibition runs until May 20, 2018.
