Kassel allocates €24 million for permanent documenta research institute

institutional · 2026-05-05

The city of Kassel has approved €24 million to build a permanent research institute and archive for documenta, the quinquennial contemporary art exhibition. The facility will be constructed on a parking lot near the university in the northern part of the city, aiming to create a new cultural hub. Funding comes from the German government (€12 million), the administrative district (€6 million), and the municipality (€4 million). The institute will house 25-30 researchers, archivists, and art historians, promoting academic research on past editions and disseminating documenta's history. This initiative is part of Kassel's broader strategy to maintain cultural relevance between editions, following documenta's first international preview in Athens and a planned 2018 event in Angola. Additionally, Kassel has invested in museum infrastructure, including the Grimmwelt Museum (opened 2014), the Neue Galerie (renovated 2007-2011 by Staab Architekten), and the Hessisches Landesmuseum (reopened 2016 after a decade-long renovation).
