Karlheinz Weinberger's Mediterranean photographs published in new book
The third volume titled "Mediterraneo" by Swiss publisher Sturm & Drang showcases the work of photographer Karlheinz Weinberger (Zurich, 1921–2006). This edition includes previously unseen photographs from his journeys across the Mediterranean, particularly in Italy, featuring the well-known "Esso man" image. In the early 1960s, Weinberger documented young male physiques and everyday life in locations such as Palma di Montechiaro, San Leone, the Lipari Islands, Lampedusa, Lecce, Naples, and Tangier. His artistic references include Visconti's "La terra trema" and Pasolini's "Accattone." A self-taught artist, Weinberger contributed to "Der Kreis" under the alias "Jim" and set up a makeshift studio at home, capturing young men he encountered in Zurich. "Mediterraneo" furthers his investigation into youth culture.
