Karl Lagerfeld's 200 photographs invade Palazzo Pitti's Palatine Gallery

A donation of Karl Lagerfeld's 'triple selfie-portrait' to the Uffizi marks the start of a three-year alliance between the museum and Pitti Immagine Discovery, signed by Director Eike Schmidt. The large manifesto work will remain on view in Palazzo Pitti's Sala di Giove until October 26, as part of the exhibition 'Karl Lagerfeld – Visions of Fashion'. The show features 200 photographs displayed in the Palatine Gallery among masterpieces by Raphael and other Italian artists, using techniques such as daguerreotype, platinum print, Polaroid transfer, resinotype, serigraphy, and digital printing. Co-curator Gerhard Steidl, long-time collaborator of Lagerfeld, worked with Eric Pfrunder and attended the preview with project advisor Isabella Brancolini, Schmidt, and Pitti Immagine's Lapo Cianchi. Two series from 2013 draw on mythology: 'Voyage d'Ulysse' starring Bianca Balti, and 'Daphnis and Chloe' shown in the Arazzi Apartments. In the legendary Sala Bianca, where Italian fashion was born in 1951, Lagerfeld installed large-format black-and-white photographs for Fendi and Chanel, creating a perspective play of reflections through mirrors. The installation may inspire the transformation of the Galleria del Costume into a Museo della Moda.
