Karen Schaupeter Launches Independent Art Book Fair in Brooklyn

The Independent Art Book Fair (IABF) debuts September 16-18 at Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse in Brooklyn, founded by artist and curator Karen Schaupeter. Over 60 exhibitors from the US and internationally will present publications ranging from $10 to $1,500, including zines, artist books, limited editions, and independent periodicals. Schaupeter conceived the fair in 2016, initially planning launches in Mexico City and Los Angeles before settling on New York. The fair runs concurrently with the New York Art Book Fair (NYABF) to leverage visiting bookmakers, with free admission at 67 West Street. Exhibitor fees range from $250 to $2,500 for 16-20 linear feet of space, aiming for a democratic and relaxed environment inspired by fairs like Index Art Book Fair in Mexico City. Programming includes daily performances from 5:00-7:00 pm by Alice Cohen, The Vets, Sex Crystals, and Tropical Rock, plus readings and panel discussions. Designers and Books will present a facsimile of Depero Futurista (1927), available for pre-order. The fair operates without financial backing, relying on volunteers including director Kayla Fanelli, with creative design by Schaupeter and contributions from Kim Sutherland, Sarah T. Engelke, and others. Schaupeter measures success by exhibitor and visitor experience rather than profitability, emphasizing a roomy, flowing atmosphere.
