Kara Walker to create 2019 Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Kara Walker will create the next Hyundai Commission for Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, with the work opening on 2 October 2019 and running through 5 April 2020. The announcement was made jointly by Tate Modern and Hyundai Motor on Tuesday. Walker's practice, which includes drawings, sculptural installations, and cutout figures, confronts violent underpinnings of race, gender, and sexuality. Tate Modern Director Frances Morris praised Walker's fearless engagement with complex contemporary issues, noting her powerful, nuanced, and witty approach to history and identity. Morris expressed excitement about how Walker will respond to the industrial scale of the Turbine Hall and the context of London and British history. The exhibition will be curated by Clara Kim, Tate's Daskalopoulos senior curator for Africa, Asia & Middle East, and Priyesh Mistry, assistant curator for international art.
