Kapwani Kiwanga's 'Estados cambiantes' at Fundació Joan Miró
Kapwani Kiwanga, winner of the 2025 Joan Miró Prize, presents her first solo exhibition in Spain, 'Estados cambiantes' (Changing States), at the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. Curated by Martina Millà, the show features recent works and three new productions created for the museum. The exhibition explores materiality as an archive, with fibers, ceramics, glass, wood, and textiles bearing histories of extractive economies, displacement, and exchange systems. Director Marko Daniel noted Kiwanga's ability to turn complex concepts into works of simplicity and care. The show is organized around three axes: transformation of materials through technology, history of economic and cultural exchanges, and overlap between human and geological time. New work 'Sentinela' dialogues between wood and glass, referencing bottle trees from the southern US. Another textile installation references Joan Miró's habit of sewing a pocket into his suits to carry a carob bean during travels, exploring the pocket as an intimate, portable space. 'Celosía' is a mirrored slat structure modulating light, playing with visibility and surveillance. The exhibition includes public programs and a catalog. Kiwanga (b. 1978, Hamilton, Canada) is French-Canadian and has received numerous awards including the Marcel Duchamp Prize (2020) and represented Canada at the 2024 Venice Biennale.
