Kapwani Kiwanga awarded 2025 Joan Miró Prize
Kapwani Kiwanga, an artist of Canadian-French descent residing in Paris and Berlin, has been awarded the 2025 Joan Miró Prize. This accolade comes with a grant of €50,000 and a solo exhibition scheduled for 2026 at the Fundació Miró in Barcelona. The jury commended Kiwanga for 'the precision and rigour with which she formalises historical and social processes that have shaped contemporary realities.' A McGill University-trained anthropologist and a graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Kiwanga represented Canada at the 2024 Venice Biennale. Her accolades include the Zurich Art Prize (2022), the Marcel Duchamp Prize (2020), and the Sobey Art Award (2018). The shortlist featured Jumana Emil Abboud, Arahmaiani, Bonnie Devine, and Christodoulos Panayiotou. Established in 2007, this biennial prize, backed by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and Cupra, celebrates artists who reflect Miró's commitment to research and innovation.
