Kansas City Symphony Plans 4,600-Seat Non-Classical Venue
Danny Beckley, the president and CEO of the Kansas City Symphony, has revealed plans to establish a new live music venue at 4901 Main St., close to the Plaza Library. This facility, which will accommodate 4,600 attendees, is being designed by Populous and will feature genres such as pop, rock, jazz, and amplified music, excluding major orchestral performances. Announced on March 30, the venue is projected to attract 300,000 visitors each year, addressing the need for mid-sized concert locations in the area. MEMI, a booking agency affiliated with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, will oversee operations. While the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts will continue to serve as the Symphony's main venue, the project is dependent on ongoing philanthropic efforts, with no disclosed budget. Brian Mirakian, a senior principal at Populous, highlighted the venue's adaptable design to support a variety of artists and improve the audience's experience. Beckley’s inspiration for this initiative comes from his past experience managing a summer music series for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra over two decades ago, which, while profitable, faced limitations due to seasonal and weather conditions.
